monique.jpgThank you to those to attended Monique Gray Smith's presentation titiled, "Belief in the Strength and Resilience of Indigenous Children and Families".

Jan Gladish, District Helping Teacher has preparing a summary of Monique's presentation.  "Monique gave a hopeful message about the incredible resilience of First Nations people. She emphasized this reality: Teachers have impact!  School can be difficult for students of aboriginal ancestry, but it doesn't have to be and most importantly, school can make a difference!"  Please visit the Aboriginal Conference on First Class to contribute your thoughts on Monique's presentation.  Janice Gladish has summarized some of the key points she remembered.  What big ideas did you take away from her talk?  We'd like to hear from you.  Please visit our conference on First Class to give your feedback (SD 36 Staff Conferences/Curriculum/Aboriginal Conference/Themes in Staff Development).

The Emily Carr University of Art + Design will be continuing its Summer Institute for Aboriginal Teens from July 5 – 30, 2010. The intent of this program is to introduce talented Aboriginal teens in grades 10, 11 and 12 to rigorous art and design training with particular focus on traditional and contemporary Aboriginal methods of expression and artistic production. Now in its third year, the program complements our Summer Institute for Teens, and builds on our history of attracting Aboriginal students to our degree programs.

This year we are pleased to offer this opportunity to students from all school districts. The 2010 Summer Institute has ten full scholarships to award to Aboriginal students. Attached is a detailed description of the program, including the Aboriginal Arts component. We are seeking dedicated and engaged Aboriginal students who are interested in learning more about art and design practices. The program is a one-month full-time commitment: it is important that scholarship recipients understand and are excited by the level of commitment. The program will be of no cost to the selected students. In addition to instruction and materials, the program includes a bus pass, meal allowances and covers all related activities and fees.

We look forward to welcoming talented young artists from the Surrey School District to the Summer Institute for Aboriginal Teens in 2010. The scholarship application form (attached) is due on February 12, 2010.

About this Website
This website was created so that Aboriginal teachers, support staff and facilitators can create opportunities so that all students have opportunities to learn about Aboriginal Culture (Cultural Presentation link).  This website is also a way in which we can inform students about scholarship opportunities and share community resource information with our Aboriginal families.

The Staff Locator link helps parents locate and contact Aboriginal Support staff in our schools.  Most importantly, this website is meant to share the many successes of our Aboriginal students (see Photo Gallery link).

For more information about this website, please contact Nadine McSpadden (mcspadden_N@sd36.bc.ca) or Jan Gladish (gladish_j@sd36.bc.ca)
